A tenant of Spanish Trails apartments in Austin speaks about why she joined the rent strike:
“I live paycheck to paycheck. If I did have a job where I didn’t live paycheck to paycheck, I would still join the rent strike in solidarity.”
She shares how the landlords are targeting who they perceive to be the main organizer, but the tenant says that the rent strike was a collective decision on the part of many tenants at the complex after many lost their jobs once the layoffs due to the economic and health crisis hit.
She says management is persistent about trying to get them to sign payment plans and give up their one-time stimulus checks for rent, which the tenants have refused.
