Commemorating the 200th Anniversary of Friedrich Engels’ Birth

Throughout the month of December revolutionaries across the world commemorated the 200th anniversary of the birth of Friedrich Engels. The following is a compilation of the actions carried out in honor of Engels.

United States

Austin

Graffiti commemorating the 200 year anniversary of Friedrich Engels’ birth was seen reading, “Long Live the Work of Marx-Engels, Crush Revisionism! Long Live Maoism!,” and “Proletarians of All Countries, Unite!” “Long Live the Work of Marx-Engels!” and “Crush Revisionism! Long Live Maoism!” alongside a hammer and sickle.

Popular Women’s Movement-Movimiento Femenino Popular (PWM-MFP) gave a presentation on the life of Friedrich Engels and emphasized his essential contribution to the fight against women’s oppression in his work The Origin of the Family, Private Property, and the State. Presenters tied his Marxist analysis to current conditions, and asserted that it is right to rebel and the only way to women’s emancipation is revolution.

Popular Women’s Movement—Movimiento Femenino Popular, created a video, in which they echo the call made by others in the International Communist Movement to recognize Engels’ place as a giant in the ideology of the proletariat and his indispensable role in the formation and development of Marxism. It also details some of his biggest contributions to Marxism through works like Anti-Dühring and The Origin of the Family, Private Property, and the State, especially his contributions to the women’s question.

Houston

In Houston, graffiti reading, “Long Live 200 Years of Friedrich Engels! Proletarians of All Countries Unite!,” and “Long Live the Work of Marx-Engels” was documented.

Los Angeles

Graffiti was documented in the Los Angeles area with the slogans, “Long Live the Work of Marx-Engels!”

Kansas City

Graffiti was also documented in Kansas City reading, “Long Live the Work of Marx-Engels!”

Pittsburgh

A banner was documented overlooking downtown Pittsburgh in honor of the 200th anniversary of Friedrich Engels’ birth, the banner read, “Long Live the 200th Anniversary of the Birth of Frederick Engels!”

St. Louis

Posters propagating the 200 year anniversary of Friedrich Engels birth were also seen around St. Louis, the posters read, “1820-1875, Long Live the 200th Anniversary of the Birth of Frederick Engels.”

Austria

Revolutionaries in Austria also carried out numerous actions commemorating the 200th anniversary of the birth of Friedrich Engels, including graffiti, demonstrations, and photos with supporters. They raised the slogans:”Down with Revisionism! Long Live Maoism!” and “200 Years, Proletarians of All Countries, Unite!”

Activists from Austria recently released a video from the numerous actions that were held celebrating the 200th anniversary of Friedrich Engels birthday, including demonstrations and several statements emphasizing his continuing importance to the struggle for Communism.

Brazil

Graffiti celebrating the 200 year anniversary of Friedrich Engels’ birth was documented in the cities of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Campinas, and Aparecida de Goiânia, with the slogan, “Proletarians of the world unite! Long live 200 years of Friedrich Engels! Down with revisionism! Long live Maoism!”

Chile

In Santiago, a postering campaign was carried out in honor of Friedrich Engels 200th birthday, including his picture and a quote from Anti-Dühring, as well as another larger poster reading “It is right to rebel!”

Colombia

Members of various revolutionary organizations held an event in Medellín in commemoration of the 200 year anniversary of the birth of Friedrich Engels. First, presentations, debate, and discussions were held on the life and contributions of Engels. Additionally, a banner was dropped on a pedestrian bridge and flyers were distributed to the people on the streets.

Finland

Posters have started popping up in the town of Turku, celebrating the 200th anniversary of Friedrich Engels’ borth and reading, “Long live the 200th anniversary of the birth of Friedrich Engels! Long live the work of Marx-Engels! Down with revisionism, long live Maoism!”

Posters have been documented in the city of Tampere in commemoration of the 200 year anniversary of Friedrich Engels’ birth as well as Chairman Gonzalo’s 86th birthday. The posters contained the slogans, “Long live the 200th anniversary of the birth of Friedrich Engels! Long Live the Work of Marx-Engels: Down with Revisionism! Long Live Maoism!”

France

The Revolutionary Youth (JR) shared a photo with a banner reading, “Friedrich Engels 200 Years,” as well as a statement that included the slogans “Long live the 200th anniversary of the birth of Friedrich Engels! Proletarians of all countries, unite! Down with revisionism! Long live Maoism!”

Germany

Revolutionary activists held a march in Engels’ birthplace in Wuppertal-Barmen to celebrate his 200th birthday, during which multiple clashes with police prevented the detainment of several participants. Activists also produced 200 red flags with the hammer and sickle and hung them around the town, including outside the Engels-haus museum.

Graffiti was also documented in Berlin reading, “200 Years Friedrich Engels!” In Bremen, an educational event was also held on his life and his contributions to Marxism.

Graffiti was also documented in Freiburg under the slogan “Long Live the Work of Marx-Engels! Proletarians of All Countries Unite!”

Mexico

Periodico Mural shared the following video, depicting the painting of a large mural of Friedrich Engels and Karl Marx which read, “F. Engels, 200 Years, A specter is haunting Europe, the World, We call him a comrade.”

Activists from Current of the People Red Sun (Sol Rojo) also participated in a national mobilization of democratic organizations in which they blocked the railroad tracks in the Port of Salina Cruz, in rejection of the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus, making a new call for unity in action and speaking out against harassment and repression carried out by the old state.

Norway

In Oslo a banner was hung on a bridge reading, “Long Live the 200th Anniversary of Friedrich Engels’ Birth!” with a hammer and sickle.

Switzerland

In Switzerland, graffiti commemorating the 200th anniversary of Engels read, “Comrade Friedrich Engels Lives in Our Struggle! 1820-200” accompanied with a hammer and sickle.
