On December 26, US Army Special Forces Sergeant Duke Webb shot six people in Rockford Illinois, killing three. The training Webb had received as a Green Beret for serving US imperialism abroad was unleashed at a local bowling alley in the early evening.

Webb first shot a group of teenagers, hitting a 16-year-old girl in the shoulder and a 14-year-old boy in the face, both of whom are now in stable condition. A 62-year-old man, hit several times, is in critical condition. The three who died were men aged 73, 65, and 69.

According to Webb’s lawyer, there is indication that he has post-traumatic stress disorder from his time in the military as well as memory loss, which could serve as a legal defense. Witnesses said Webb did admit to the murders when police arrived at Don Carter Lanes and showed officers where he had hidden his two handguns.

At the time of the shooting, Webb was visiting family on leave from his assignment as a Special Forces Assistant Operations and Intelligence sergeant in Elgin Air Force Base, Florida. Webb has served four deployments in Afghanistan since 2008.

The Special Forces, also known as Green Berets, are a force of the US Army whose specialty is unconventional warfare. The Special Forces are trained to carry out insurgencies to “coerce, disrupt, or overthrow a government or occupying power” and replace it with one favorable to US imperialism. They also “prevent terrorist and insurgent incidents abroad … and train other nations’ militaries in the basics of fighting insurgents.”

Webb has been noted for his exemplary service record, with awards including two Bronze Stars, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Medal, and the Combat Action Badge. “The alleged actions of Sgt. 1st Class Duke Webb are abhorrent and are absolutely not representative of the Special Forces Regiment,” Major General John W. Brennan told the bourgeois press.

While these killings were not ordered by Webb’s commanding officers, the slaughter of the oppressed, the workers, and the people of the world is representative of the Green Berets’ operations and those of the US military.
