Camp Manoel Ribeiro is Attacked Again and Peasants Resist; See Video

The following is an unofficial translation of A Nova Democracia’s article Camp Manoel Ribeiro is Attacked Again and Peasants Resist.

Peasants resist a cowardly attack by police and gunmen at the behest of landowners, January 2021.

There follows the escalation of the reactionary violence of the latifundium and the old state against the peasants of Camp Manoel Ribeiro.

Peasants reported an unusual movement in the Nossa Senhora estate, between 6 pm and 8 pm on the evening of January 20: a police vehicle entered the headquarters; 4 trucks, cars and motorbikes were hovering along the main road that gives access to Chupinguaia (Line MC01) and on the roads within the latifundium; a drone flew over the camp. Campers reported that gunmen then shot a large caliber gun at a security post at Camp Manoel Ribeiro.

Due to the presence of the police vehicle at the headquarters of the latifundium, these crimes committed by gunmen from the latifundio Nossa Senhora had the connivance of police officers. This is certain, but given the history of Brazil, especially Rondônia, it is certain that this was another case in which the police act as private security for the latifundio.

Peasants from Camp Manoel Ribeiro Reject Police and Gunmen in a Whole Day of Resistance

Peasants resist with burning barricades and fireworks, January 2021

Families from the Manoel Ribeiro camp firmly resisted attacks by the police and the landowners that extended throughout January 18.

After the latifundio’s vain attempt to intimidate peasants by sending gunmen into the occupied area, dozens of police from different law enforcement agencies launched two attacks against families.

The workers managed to record on video the moment of the aggression.

Gunmen of the Latifundio Try to Intimidate the Peasants

According to the families’ report, on the morning of the 18th, two men from the Nossa Senhora latifundium, carrying short weapons on their waists, one of them hooded, moved towards the camp in a pickup truck (white flag) and approached one of the gates in the area busy.

When they realized that the peasants were not intimidated, they said that they just wanted to talk and that they wanted the workers to vacate the area, claiming that they needed to remove part of the cattle from the landowner.

Faced with intimidation, the peasants gathered together and stood firm and refused to leave the place.

In Coordinated Action with the Latifundia Police Make a Failed Attempt at Illegal Eviction

In the afternoon of the same day, at around 3 pm, the families spotted 7 police vehicles arriving at the latifundium headquarters. Then, together with the farmer’s pickup trucks, the police headed for Manoel Ribeiro camp with the aim of expelling the peasants from Fazenda Nossa Senhora.

Military police and other dark camouflaged vehicles of special troops participated in the attack, but which the peasants were unable to identify.

About 30 policemen carrying shields and in attack formation confronted the families camped in a hateful illegal operation.

Responding to the advance of the repressive forces that threatened to invade part of the occupied area, the peasants set up barricades in flames and launched fireworks.

At all times the peasants denounced the criminal character of the operation carried out without any warrant, as if it were no longer absurd by its own anti-people nature. “Fighting is not a crime!” “Even if the thing thickens, this land is ours!” “If the peasant does not plant, the city does not have lunch or dinner!” “1, 2, 3, 4, 5, thousand, advances the League throughout Brazil!” “Gunmen of the latifundium!” “These lands have no documents. The farmer grabbed everything,” “These lands belong to the ancient Santa Elina! These lands belong to the people,” shouted the workers in the midst of fighting songs.

Police Blocks Road

The police and vehicles then blocked the main road that cuts through neighboring Revolutionary Areas and gives access to the camp. Vehicles from the military police and environmental police riot police have been identified.

Organized, the families wielded red flags, chanted fighting songs, slogans and raised their work tools.

Faced with the vibrant resistance, after about half an hour, the vehicles lifted the blockade, went to the headquarters of the Nossa Senhora Aparecida farm, where they stopped, and retired to the city of Chupinguaia.

Police officers removed flags and plaques indicating the entrance to Camp Manoel Ribeiro – another illegal action, as they were placed on private peasant properties. The following morning the flags were already flying again, replaced by the peasants in the same places.

Peasants Denounce Articulation of Local Landlords

Workers’ suspicions that other landowners in the region are supporting the Nossa Senhora Aparecida estate are growing.

According to complaints from peasants in neighboring areas, since the 3 days preceding the attacks, the headquarters of the Nossa Senhora farm has shown unusual movement of different cars and trucks.

The rapid and constant entry and exit of vehicles reported by the residents would be the result of a possible meeting of the local landowners, one of whom is the land thief Antenor Duarte, known for being one of those responsible for the heinous crime that occurred in 1995 known as “Massacre de Corumbiara “.

In addition, the presence of gunmen at night stopped on the road, near the entrance to the latifundio headquarters.

As we pointed out in our last article, this articulation of the landowners is due to the fear that more landless peasants and unemployed people from neighboring municipalities will follow the example of the Manoel Ribeiro camp and take other landowners, pushed by the serious crisis.
