On Sunday, a 40-foot vessel capsized near Point Loma in San Diego as 31 migrants were being smuggled into the US by sea. Three died in the wreck and the captain, a US citizen, was detained by US Immigrant and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
One Guatemalan and 30 Mexican nationals were on board when the boat capsized—footage taken by onlookers show people jumping into the water as the waves tore the boat apart. Five passengers were hospitalized following the shipwreck.
In the last several years, maritime smuggling between Mexico and the US has increased. Just three days prior US Border Patrol intercepted a small boat with 21 Mexican nationals near Point Loma.
The subjugation of the Third World by US imperialism, especially in Latin America, forces people to flee their home countries through perilous conditions in the desperate search for better living conditions. These same conditions also create the unscrupulous smugglers who cash in on migrants’ desperation and cram as many as possible on small boats and inside trucks at the expense of the safety and well-being of migrants.
