Revolutionaries Commemorate Chairman Gonzalo across United States

Editor’s note: the following is a collection of actions from the past week across the United States in honor of Chairman Gonzalo, leader of the Communist Party of Peru (PCP) and the Peruvian Revolution, who died on September 11 after 29 years of solitary confinement as a prisoner of the Peruvian State.


Houston

Revolutionaries held an event in honor of Chairman Gonzalo on September 18, celebrating his legacy with speeches, poems, and revolutionary songs from the PCP. Attendees also discussed Chairman Gonzalo’s importance to the International Communist Movement and watched his transcendental speech from the cage after being captured by the Peruvian State.

Los Angeles

On September 18, anti-imperialist organization Serve the People – Los Angeles organized a rally in honor of Chairman Gonzalo. Community members gathered to make posters and held an impromptu demonstration at a busy intersection.

Oxnard

On Saturday, as a part of the international call to honor the life and contributions of Chairman Gonzalo, Tribune of the People’s Oxnard Support Committee, Oxnard Revolutionary Study Group, and Revolutionary Student News held an event at Southwinds Park in Oxnard. Organizers of the event gave speeches on Chairman Gonzalo’s life, his leadership of the People’s War, as well as his ideological contributions to the ideology of the proletariat. Organizers put on a street theater performance covering the history of the PCP and the imprisonment of Chairman Gonzalo, as well as a musical performance of the revolutionary songs “Without Power” and “Red Flag.”

Austin

On Wednesday, Red Aid, a group which supports political prisoners, gathered in Austin with a banner reading, “We demand a dignified Burial for Abimael Guzman!” On their website, the group issued a statement to reiterate this demand, which read: “The Peruvian government is threatening to cremate Guzman’s body and spread the ashes in the Pacific Ocean in order to prevent him from having a dignified burial. The state had him under its care for 30 years, and chose not to give him the medical attention he needed. We echo the demand from The Brazilian Center for Solidarity with the People (Cebraspo, Centro Brasileiro de Solidariedade aos Povos) that Abimael Guzmán receive a proper burial.”

Pittsburgh

The Tribune Support Committee in Pittsburgh put on a film screening for “People of the Shining Path,” a documentary that covers the People’s War in Peru, including interviews with combatants and peasants.

Elsewhere in the city, graffiti in support of Chairman Gonzalo and the PCP were documented, including one mural along the bank of the Monongahela river, measuring approximately 75 feet long, reading, “Eternal Honor and Glory to Chairman Gonzalo.”

Orlando

The Orlando Tribune Support Committee held a commemoration for Chairman Gonzalo on Saturday, September 18. The event included reading of the statements issued by revolutionary organizations around the world as well as a discussion on internationalism and Chairman Gonzalo’s importance to the International Communist Movement.

New England

The New England Tribune Support Committee was out on the streets distributing articles and speaking to the people on the importance of Chairman Gonzalo.

Charlotte

The Tribune Support Committee in Charlotte held an agitation brigade, speaking to the public on the importance of Chairman Gonzalo while distributing the article “Honor and Glory to Chairman Gonzalo, Greatest Son of the International Proletariat.”

Phoenix

The Tribune Support Committee in Phoenix held an educational event on Chairman Gonzalo. Attendees were encouraged to ask questions, and conversations we had about the importance of countering the imperialist propaganda attacking Chairman Gonzalo. A screening of the documentary “You Must Tell The World,” which covered the campaign to defend the life of Chairman Gonzalo in the early 1990’s, was also shown.

El Paso

Official Supporters gathered at Memorial Park on Saturday to commemorate Chairman Gonzalo’s life and sacrifice for the World Proletarian Revolution. The supporters marched with a red flag and portrait of Chairman Gonzalo and sang the Internationale. The statement written by the Zonal Committee Ayacucho of the PCP in 1990 was recited by a supporter. 

Tacoma

On September 18, the Tacoma Tribune Support Committee and revolutionaries from cities across the Pacific Northwest held a rally in front of the Peruvian consulate in Seattle to honor the life and work of Chairman Gonzalo. Later they split up across working class neighborhoods in south Seattle to agitate and discuss the significance of the event with workers and passersby.

Eugene

Graffiti was also documented in Eugene, Oregon with the slogans, “Chairman Gonzalo lives in the struggle” and “Long live the People’s War in Peru,” along with hammer and sickles.

Rochester

A banner was documented in Rochester reading, “Eternal honor and glory to Chairman Gonzalo, Long live the People’s War in Peru!”


Posters with Chairman Gonzalo’s face and the slogan “Eternal Honor and Glory to Chairman Gonzalo” were also documented in several cities:
