On October 1, the Communist Party of Ecuador-Red Sun (PCE-SR, Partido Comunista del Ecuador-Sol Rojo) released a statement along with photos of actions in honor of Chairman Gonzalo (Abimael Guzman Reynoso), the leader of the Communist Party of Peru and the Peruvian revolution who died on September 11. Gonzalo was assassinated by the reactionary Peruvian State under the direction of US imperialism, who kept him in a permanent state of psychological and physical torture ever since his capture 29 years ago on September 12, 1992, allowing easily treatable disease to overtake Chairman Gonzalo.
The PCE-SR begins their statement:
The consummation of the assassination of Chairman Gonzalo has been a hard blow for the international proletariat, but under no circumstances does this fact represent the defeat of the people’s war in Peru, and much less does it eliminate or neutralize the historical significance of the figure of one of the greatest communists that the international proletariat has had in its ranks after Marx, Engels, Lenin, Stalin and Chairman Mao.
Various photos released by PCE-SR show militants standing with red flags, machetes, and rifles alongside posters of Chairman Gonzalo.
In their statement, the PCE-SR goes on to celebrate Gonzalo’s immense contributions to the world proletarian revolution, in particular his development of the proletarian ideology of Marxism-Leninism-Maoism:
Chairman Gonzalo gave his life to the party and the revolution, developing Marxism-Leninism-Maoism, but also became the most effective touchstone for distinguishing revolutionaries from counter-revolutionaries; for unmasking and fighting revisionists and opportunists of all sorts.
The revisionists and opportunists that PCE-SR refers to include the Right-Opportunist-Line (ROL), headed by Elena Ipaguirre (also known as Miriam), who have worked alongside the Peruvian State and the CIA to falsely portray Chairman Gonzalo as a capitulator. The PCE-SR says Gonzalo “smashed the plans of imperialism, reaction and the ROL to defeat the people’s war in Peru…”
The statement explains that Gonzalo transformed his cell at the Callao Naval Base in Lima into “a luminous trench of combat from where he kept the people’s war burning in the service of the world proletarian revolution.” The PCE-SR refer to his cell as an ergastulum, which was a Roman dungeon that was isolated, subterranean, and meant to chain up slaves. Gonzalo’s own cell was below sea level and did not have natural light.
The PCE-SR concludes its statement with the affirmation:
Chairman Gonzalo will live in every combat undertaken, in every drop of blood shed, in every victory we wrest from imperialism and reaction; Chairman Gonzalo will live forever in the hearts and struggles of the oppressed class and peoples of the world.
