Chairman Gonzalo (Abimael Guzman Reynoso) was assassinated by the old Peruvian State on September 11. Since then, revolutionaries, people’s organizations, and progressives around the world have mobilized to carry out actions to honor his sacrifice and his contributions to the World Proletarian Revolution. Chairman Gonzalo was the leader of the Communist Party of Peru (PCP, Partido Comunista del Perú). He developed the proletarian ideology of Marxism-Leninism-Maoism by applying the teachings of Chairman Mao to the concrete reality of Peru and through his leadership of the People’s War in Peru.
Actions have not only honored Gonzalo, but denounced the Peruvian State, which, under the direction of US imperialism, killed him through a prolonged process of torture and isolation. The reactionaries allowed easily treatable diseases to overcome Chairman Gonzalo during his 29 years of solitary confinement at the Callao Naval Base. However, Chairman Gonzalo died delivering another defeat to the reactionaries, never once betraying the People’s War, and giving his life for World Proletarian Revolution and the ultimate goal of Communism.
On October 3, the Revolutionary Front for the Defense of the People’s Rights (FRDDP, Frente Revolucionária de Defesa dos Direitos do Povo) and the A Nova Democracia Support Committee held an event in honor of Chairman Gonzalo in the Zona da Mata. The League of Poor Peasants (Liga dos Camponeses Pobre) and Popular Women’s Movement (MFP, Movimento Feminino Popular) was also in attendance. The event commenced with the singing of the Internationale and various speeches were given on the life and work of Chairman Gonzalo.
On October 3, the FRDDP hosted an event in Belo Horizonte to commemorate Chairman Gonzalo. Other revolutionary organizations in attendance included MFP, Revolutionary Popular Student Movement (Movimento Estudantil Popular Revolucionário), and Red Unity (Unidade Vermelha).
The article “Dr. Ruben Manuel Abimael Guzmán Reynoso, Chairman Gonzalo, Dies” from revolutionary news service A Nova Democracia was read out loud. All attendees sang the Internationale and MFP performed “Lutadoras da Revolução” (Fighters from the Revolution) at the end of the event.
Across Brazil, in cities such as Rio de Janeiro, graffiti has continued to appear with the slogan “Chairman Gonzalo lives in his all-powerful thought!”
The Communist Party of Ecuador-Sol Rojo (PCE-SR, Partido Comunista del Ecuador-Sol Rojo) published a statement along with photos of actions carried out to honor Chairman Gonzalo. They wrote:
Chairman Gonzalo will live in every combat undertaken, in every drop of blood shed, in every victory we wrest from imperialism and reaction; Chairman Gonzalo will live forever in the hearts and struggles of the oppressed class and peoples of the world.
In Dublin, Socialist Republicans held a vigil for Chairman Gonzalo at the statue of James Connolly, the father of Irish Socialist Republicanism, as part of the international day of action to commemorate Chairman Gonzalo on September 24, called for by the Communist Party of Peru and Communist Party of Brazil (Red Fraction).
